About Q2Online -------------- * One stop site to start playing any Quake 2 modification * "No setup required", just click a link and play * Direct connect buttons (like quake2:// links) can be integrated to any site * Includes a matchmaker that automatically searches a suitable server with players for you * Based on the great Q2PRO client by skuller * Cross-platform, Windows, Linux and Mac OS X at this point * Uses official and free id Software demo files and nothing more (baseq2) * Mods can have unique menu system and default configuration * Automatic updates * Core launcher written in Java - runs on any platform that has a OpenJDK port For mod communities ------------------- * Each mod requires at least one person who takes the initiative to create the content for the q2online.net/ site. * The site consists of a few banners, introduction text, FAQ and such all in a single web page and the important launch buttons and a server list. * Create a client data package that installs the necessary client files over Q2Online distribution system, only free to distribute content * Preferrably no "original" content, retextures or similiar addons * The client data should contain a freshly built game dll/so from the official sources for the supported platforms for local testing and LAN parties (Win32, Linux x86 and x86_64 for now) * Create a unique q2pro.menu file to allow the player to configure all necessary mod related options within the in-game menu system * Create a new default.cfg file that represents the most standard default keys new players would feel comfortable with. Think about recent FPS shooters and their configs (like WASD movement, SPACE jumping etc.) even if they are not the most optimal keys for fast paced gameplay like Quake 2. * If the mod has a standard set of maps, those should be included, non-standard maps must be downloadable from the server over either HTTP (preferred) or directly over UDP If you are a mod developer and interested in integrating your mod, please contact me (hifi) on QuakeNet IRC. If there is no mod developer (abandoned etc.), discuss this within your scene and select a few persons who should be responsible for the client data. - hifi, the Action Quake 2 guy who cared --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
